Your result

Everyone over the age of 18 should have a valid will if they want to be sure their estate goes to the people they choose. Without one, the intestacy rules decide who inherits.

Based on your answers, here is why a will matters for you.

  • A will lets you decide who inherits your home and any other property you own.
  • Under the intestacy rules in England and Wales, an unmarried partner has no automatic right to inherit if you die without a will.
  • A will lets you appoint guardians to look after your children if they are under 18.
  • Stepchildren who have not been legally adopted do not inherit under the intestacy rules, so a will is the way to provide for them.
  • Friends and charities receive nothing under the intestacy rules, so you need a will to include them.
  • Marriage or civil partnership usually cancels an existing will in England and Wales, and divorce changes how a will works, so your will may need updating.
  • A will can set out what should happen to your business interests.
  • A will lets you choose your executors, the people who will deal with your estate.
